![]() ‘Love Again’ Review: Not Even Celine Dion Can Save This Wildly Contrived Rom-Com from Its Own SadnessĮileen’s days and ways form a chain of unhappy moments. ![]() But it’s also entirely its own weird, beautiful thing, even if it doesn’t quite rub audiences as deeply in the muck of Eileen’s miserable existence as the novel did. Thomasin McKenzie, playing the title character, and Anne Hathaway, playing the alluring blonde-headed woman that seemingly drops from the sky and into her life, give career-best performances in an oddly touching queer almost-romance that feels like a cross between “Carol” and Hitchcock (Moshfegh herself has named his film “Rebecca,” which shares a name with Hathaway’s character here, as a touchstone). ![]() The rest of “Lady Macbeth” director William Oldroyd’s second feature never quite matches the giddy perversity of that image, but no matter, because this stylish 1960s-set noir adapted from Ottessa Moshfegh’s mean and pungent novel of the same name is a dark treat throughout. ![]() As another couple makes out in a backseat of the next car, Eileen watches, glowering lustily, and grabs a handful of muddy snow, shoves it down her pants, and masturbates. He is expansive and self-assured with a spry sense of humour and a natural storyteller’s love of anecdote. “I’m not there yet,” he says, sitting in the boardroom of his publisher’s London offices on a broilingly hot day. Vonnegut, who was then 58, gave him a dire warning: “The day is going to come when you don’t have a book to write and you’re still going to have to write a book.” Now 72, Rushdie is happy to report that that day hasn’t arrived. Rushdie, at last a viable novelist after a decade in advertising, said that he was. “Are you serious about this writing business?” Vonnegut asked at one point. The fire is a symbol for warmth and peace. The main character Nat understands it very well, and when getting necessary things for the siege, fuel for the fire is the main one in his list. As long as the fire is set in the fireplace, the birds cannot get into the house through the chimney. The fire becomes a symbol for salvation and and life-saving. The community of birds is an allegoric representation of the community of people, with the only difference – birds do not attack each other, while people have done the complete opposite. Like during the war, there is inhumanity and absurdity in killing thousands of people, and the very war was just a simple destruction and extermination of humankind. The allusions to the Second World War help to understand the main idea and message of the author. The reason why they started behaving so aggressively against people is not clear – it is just a fact that birds start attacking people all over the country.
